According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, Rama, the son of king Dasharata, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana, lived as simple hermits in the forests of Chitrakoot for twelve years, while they were exiled.
Nowadays there are various holy sites with many temples, where Rama and Sita are worshipped.
