moni elonis
This monastery is perched up high in the Parnon mountains on the way from Leonidi to Kosmas.
Coming by car or on foot, you will see Elona Monastery sitting on the cliffs above you.
The history of the monastery goes back to 1300 CE. At first it was only a small wooden church. The current church of the monastery dates back to 1809. The iconostasis (a wall of icons and religious paintings) is carved in walnutwood and has hagiography scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The spire of the church was built in 1831. The church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, which is celebrated on August 15th.
The icon is said to have miraculous powers and it is processed down into Leonidi twice a year. In the past the journey had to be done on foot on a small path. Nowadays a motorable road connects the monastery with the world.
