Mt Ararat
Located in modern day Turkey in East Anatolia, Mt Ararat is a snow-capped and dormant volcano that consists of two major volcanic cones: Greater Ararat and Little Ararat. Greater Ararat is the highest peak in Turkey and the Armenian highlands with an elevation of 5.137 m; Little Ararat’s elevation is 3.896 m.
Ararat is the place, where—according to the bible—Noah landed after the great deluge.
Even though it is politically now part of Turkey, Mt Ararat stands at the geographical center of the Armenian highlands and was the center of the Kingdom of Armenia in antiquity. The Armenian people still regard the mountain as holy and their national symbol.
I climbed the Ararat together with two Spanish hikers in 2014.
